Schimshander

Scrimshander, a digital animation by George Smaragdis, is about a friendship between an inquisitive boy and an old, solitary bone carver. Slowly, the man`s mysterious past resurfaces, resulting in terrible consequences. Since the sea is such an important element in the narrative, Smaragdis programmed a fractal shader network in order to achieve shoreline movement while maintaining the aesthetic of the environment design. New tools were created to procedurally accommodate a large variety of textures, including wood, bone, skin, and rusted metal, as well as new solutions for dynamic effects, such as dynamic multi-object sticktion. The musical score was also composed and performed by Smaragdis.
