Diaspora

Diaspora is a seven minutes video piece that explores the painful memories of Cypriot refugees. Dance movement is incorporated with researched video and photo material to relate these memories. The everyday life of the refugee is built around strong feelings and experiences expressed through the ceremonial process. The daily mourning of the refugee indirectly informs the viewer of the atrocities that have occurred in the past and that are still occurring to this present day. The documentation of the daily actions of an elderly character is a main component that shapes the videopiece. Every aspect on the female figure reveals her past, which is overwhelmed with pain and grief. These aspects include the wrinkled face, the distinct hands, the scared skin, the aged eyes, the firm and determine posture. This project is developed to target people with an interest in visual and performance art in addition to individuals interested in historical and social content. The initial concept derived from the idea that I wanted to develop a piece about the war in 1974, I wanted to convey a universal message regarding the pain and the suffering that wars in general inflict on people.
