Turn
Turn was filmed at a camera obscura on Ocean Beach, San Francisco, which I visited and revisited over a period of time to record. The piece is split-screened, its parts turning like cogs through different times of the day as the camera rotates and pans over the ocean and seafront, capturing movements of light, waves, and unaware passers by. Sound was created by the artist and uses the noise of a clockwork mechanism, drones, and cymbals. “Turn” is from a group of recent works created in response to locations around the San Francisco Bay area during a 3month fellowship in 2011 at Kala, Berkeley, CA. Investigating place and medium in relation to time. The project was supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, and by Kala Art Institute, Berkeley CA, USA.
