The black curtain

The black curtain is based on a short story by Michael Ende. It’s about a dancer getting ready just before the opening of the performance. She patiently awaits for the black curtain to raise, something which never happens. Scared of being exposed, she never lets go of her opening dancing position. The exposure fear freezes her, and over time, weariness and pain overcome her body and soul. An allegory of all things we would like to say and do but fear of social exposure and disapproval prevents us, keeping us grounded, passive and ultimately, defeated.
