The video is part of the presentation of a lecture with the subject “Urban Voids” which was given at the D.U.Th. department of Architectural Engineering on February 2006, by John Kolovos, Popi Kalaitzi and Constantinos Economou. The video was created by C. Economou, from pictures which were elaborated with “Paintbrush” and edited with Windows Movie Maker. The video presents three examples of Urban Voids which transformed into living spaces. The places are a vacant unbuilt lot, roofs of buildings and part of the old refugee blocks, placed on Alexandras Avenue. Urban voids are born as leftover areas within the Urban fabric that leave incomplete, or disrupt the continuity of the city. These are vacant areas lacking a meaning, however at the same time contain multiple meanings and despite the fact of not having an obvious use they accept markings or unplanned, unforeseeable uses caused by the temporary inhabitants. Urban voids are spaces in the city with the potential to contribute in creating more human living conditions. They can provide vital spaces for the habitants of the cities, which can be used, organized and plant to the public’s needs and in order to accomplish better living conditions.
