Regarding the pain of others

A darkly dressed figured walks through the streets of Brooklyn, slowly and progressively destroying a lens attached to a perpetrating camera. Shot in the middle of January, the only tools given to the figure are a small jar and nail. As the video progresses, other objects and methods must be sought to obliterate the lens. How can one radically resist the pervasiveness of the imagery? What kind of physical space will technology occupy in the future? These questions were some of the early ideas behind how this video was conceived. The title, “Regarding the Pain of Others”, is the name of a collection of essays by the writer Susan Sontag, whose texts on photography and social histories have been an important influence on the artist`s life.
