The story is a dream-nightmare. We are in a fictional city where all the citizens are limping. The main character (a woman) is searching for a store to replace a broken heel from her shoe. But, in order to have it fixed her leg should be amputated. This procedure makes her feel excruciating pain resulting in her waking up.
