Commonly Used Video Formats

While video has become an increasingly transparent medium, Hapetzeder wishes to point at its distinctiveness. In contrast to older artistic techniques, Video art, connected to its tools for labour, is constantly changing with the techno economical shifts in society. «Commonly Used Video Formats» (6:57 min, 3840×2160 UHD video 2017) is an experimental work including several elements. Exercises for a future video art collective (1920×1080 HDV) are made in collaboration with children in a staging where they examine social, spatial and aesthetic circumstances through the encounter with video as practice, filmed through the children’s point of view. The video work 4:3 Standard Definition (720×576 DV) builds on artist Marit Lindberg’s unused footage, which was donated to Felice Hapetzeder. Through this, Hapetzeder sees similarities in his own filmed production until 2007, which is also included in the work. The focus of the selected material is on events in the public space. It is a retrospective view of an outdated video format and also of a time in the artist’s life. Other materials in the work are home movies taken with current smartphones. All materials are shown pixel-to-pixel in relation to each other on the same UHD 4K screen.
